Entry of Plasma Sheet Particles into the Inner Magnetosphere Observed by POLAR/CAMMICE

چکیده
Statistical results are presented from Polax/CAMMICE measurements of events during which the plasma sheet ions have penetrated deeply into the inner magnetosphere. Owing to their characteristic structure in energy-time spectrograms, these events are called "intense nose events." Almost 400 observations of such structures were made during 1997. Intense nose events axe shown to be more frequent in the dusk than in the dawn sector. They typically penetrate well inside L 4, the deepest penetration having occurred around midnight and noon. The intense nose events axe associated with magnetic (substorm) activity. However, even moderate activity (AE = 150-250 nT) resulted in formation of these structures. In a case study of November 3, 1997, three sequential inner magnetosphere crossings of the Polar and Interball Auroral spacecraft are shown, each of which exhibited signatures of intense nose-like structures. Using the innermost boundary determinations from these observations, it is demonstrated that a large-scale convective electric field alone cannot account for the inward motion of the structure. It is suggested that the intense nose structures are caused by short-lived intense electric fields (in excess of •-1 mV/m) in the inner tail at L=4-5.

Self-Consistent hot spot tracing particles by kinetic simulations: With the emphasis on Cusp particle entry
One of the most important advantages of particle simulation as compared to fluid simulation is the capacity for working with and tracing particles. In particle simulations, the test particle method is usually used to get some idea of the behavior of plasma or other substances. In this method, first, a small number of particles are injected into the frame of static electromagnetic fields. Then, ...
متن کاملOccurrence statistics of cold, streaming ions in the near-Earth magnetotail: Survey of Polar-TIDE observations
[1] Results are presented from a survey of cold ion observations in the near-Earth magnetotail using data from the Polar Thermal Ion Dynamics Experiment (TIDE). During the interval from July to December of 2001, Polar had its apogee ( 9.5 RE) near the equatorial plane in the tail region of the magnetosphere. It is shown that a lobal wind is ubiquitous in the inner tail, with low-energy (<300 eV...
متن کاملDawn-dusk asymmetry in particles of solar wind origin within the magnetosphere
Solar wind/magnetosheath plasma in the magnetosphere can be identified using a component that has a higher charge state, lower density and, at least soon after their entry into the magnetosphere, lower energy than plasma from a terrestrial source. We survey here observations taken over 3 years of He2+ ions made by the Magnetospheric Ion Composition Sensor (MICS) of the Charge and Mass Magnetosp...
متن کاملThermal electron periodicities at 20RS in Saturn’s magnetosphere
[1] Cassini fields and particles observations show clear evidence of periodic phenomena in Saturn’s magnetosphere. Periodicities have been observed in kilometric radio emissions, total electron density (in the inner magnetosphere), magnetic fields, and energetic particles (in the outer magnetosphere). In this letter the first analysis of periodicities in thermal electron densities in Saturn’s o...
متن کاملA comparison between ion characteristics observed by the POLAR and DMSP spacecraft in the high-latitude magnetosphere
We study here the injection and transport of ions in the convection-dominated region of the Earth’s magnetosphere. The total ion counts from the CAMMICE MICS instrument aboard the POLAR spacecraft are used to generate occurrence probability distributions of magnetospheric ion populations. MICS ion spectra are characterised by both the peak in the differential energy flux, and the average energy...
